Nancy graduated with a BA in painting and drawing from Cal State Fullerton after mounting her first show at 19. She spent the next eight years painting for galleries and private shows, specializing in portraiture.
In 1984, she completed the official lithograph for the U.S. Olympic Field and Track Team. Shortly after, she illustrated twelve childrens books, which included a series for Disney.
It was during this time that she began pursuing a career in weaving and textile art. She states, I found that working with tactile materials satisfied my visceral need for color and pattern without the confinement of imagery.
The traditional fine craft of weaving on a manual loom incorporates her Mennonite heritage with her passion of formal aesthetic elements. She produces wearable art and jewelry, as well as interior designs and visual art.
She explains, I am primarily a colorist and patternist with a fascination of how both properties manifest themselves in various mediums. A snapshot or a poem can become a full-scale painting, or an abstract color field, leading to a woven wall hanging or wearable art. My challenge is to infuse these works of art with the significance of spiritual meaning and the visual representation of the invisible world.
