John received a BS in Physics from San Diego State University in 1961 and then worked for 33 years as an aerospace engineer. To relieve the mounting stress of that job, John started taking glass blowing classes at Orange Coast College in 1985 and continued through 1988. It was this exposure to the arts that prompted his desire for a degree in Art. After enrolling in Cal State Fullerton, John received his Masters of Arts in 1993, and Masters of Fine Arts in glass 1997.
Silversmithing was an interest from the mid-70’s that he added to his repertoire. In 1992, John began to merge the two materials, with silver as a decorative enhancement added to the blown glass. This combination of the two mediums proved to be most challenging and has since developed into a unique style of his own.
In 1993 John attended Pilchuck Glass School and took an Advanced Flame Working Class from the Italian master, Cesare Rossit, where he learned the basics of lamp working which he also now incorporates.
In 1995 John retired from engineering to spend full time working on his MFA, teaching glass at Cal State Fullerton during 1998 and again during 2001, and now has built his own instructional studio at Corona Heritage Park.
